The University of North Dakota (UND) was one of the first universities in the world to introduce an Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) undergraduate degree in 2009 which includes extensive UAS Operations. Since its introduction the program has continued to expand; today 230 undergraduate students have declared UAS as their program of study.
UND has been a world leader in Autonomous Systems and UAS-related research. Research ranging from projects such as UAS Air Traffic Control interoperability, control, and communication, detect and avoid, human factors, spectrum management, safety risk management, safety waivers, aircraft certification, pilot training, UAS operations, UAS traffic management, urban and advanced air mobility, and crew training. The sponsors of these projects include private industry as well as both federal and state governments.
Through the Alliance for System Safety of UAS through Research Excellence, or ASSURE, UND has lead research utilizing expertise from various UND colleges/departments such as UND Aviation, Atmospheric Sciences, Space Studies, Engineering, Cyber Security, Computer Science as well as UND’s Research Institute for Autonomous Systems (RIAS). Recently, UND Aerospace signed a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with DHS/CBP Air and Marine Operations that builds a partnership to expand the knowledge of unmanned aircraft and ADA/CUAS systems.
Our goals include:
- Recognized as Leaders in UAS Education/Training
- Engaged with Industry and government, influencing through education, research, innovation, safety, and policy.
- Creating a world-class infrastructure for UAS development, testing, and evaluation
- Promoting commercialization of new UAS-related products and services
- Promoting private sector job growth within Grand Forks and throughout the state of North Dakota
