Montana State University (MSU) is a regionally accredited public research university accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU), with continuous accreditation since 1932. In 2025, MSU received reaffirmation of its accreditation and is currently in the first year of the NWCCU’s seven-year accreditation cycle.
MSU is also a land-grant university, recognized for its mission of extending practical knowledge to the public and contributing to community development, workforce training, and applied research across Montana and beyond.
In February 2025, the American Council on Education (ACE) and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching designated MSU as a Research 1 (R1) institution—the highest classification for research activity in the United States. This designation recognizes MSU’s very high research spending and doctoral production, underscoring the university’s capacity for innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and applied research excellence across disciplines.
